Society is Putting Our Lives on the Line

Most people carry their names with pride. They come to this country looking to assimilate but also looking to retain their own identity—whether it’s their appearance, their cultural identity, or their name. During 1975, social conflicts, like racial discrimination and women’s rights, have been brought up into question as one can see in the play: A Chorus Line. Throughout the play, there seems to be a theme of individuality. However, many people feel pressure even today to create a name that conforms to societal standards or media expectations. This is even seen in the popular television show, Riverdale when someone steals a character’s identity. She says, “My name. Which after telling me ‘Nobody would ever take it,’ that is exactly what she did! Like it meant nothing. Like it was nothing. Like I was nothing” (Riverdale). This reference on how a name is tied to one’s own identity showcasing your unique character.
